MC500S with engine smoke

I have a MC500S push lawnmower with a Briggs and Stratton engine. I cleaned out the carburetor 2 mths ago and it was running fine. Now, it's smoking from the engine and the lawnmower takes a while shut down even when you release the handle. The lawnmower started to stall yesterday. Any suggestions what causing it to smoke from the engine when shutting down and why it's not shutting down. Any tutorial link would be great. Thank you

Are you saying you are getting smoke from the engine at shutdown only, and not while running. If I am thinking correctly, the kill switch isn't working correctly, and the smoke is coming from the engine brake since the engine is trying to run with the brakes on.

I started to run it today and it was smoking from the front of the mower and then died out. I'll load a picture of it tomorrow. I just saw another video online and realize that I never had my O ring placed correctly back in the carburetor when I put it back on. I'll fix that tomorrow. Could that have caused a blown head gasket where the oil is not going in correctly? Is there a test to determine if that's the problem?

Hello, Sparky,

What color is the smoke? If the smoke is grey/black this indicates the engine is running rich and the fuel needs to be changed and the carburetor cleaned. While if the smoke is blue/white this indicates the engine is burning oil and it could be overfilled, or there could be an issue with the head gasket or piston rings.

Hi,

It's white smoke but I may be all set. I was thinking that it may be a problem w/the head gasket or oil. I changed the oil and also realized I had the O-Ring in the carburetor incorrectly. Fixed that too. Seemed to be running ok but we'll see how it does when I cut the grass this wkend
