Mandrel assy. on yth 2246

Just replaced the mandrel, but when I engage the blades, I get white smoke right under the pulley......I loosened the top nut, this helped some, but the spacer is damaging the top of the mandrel.... Any suggestion, or has anyone else had to trouble shoot after replacing the mandrel away.?

Never worked on this one but looking at the parts catalog I see two places for problems. 1st wrong spacer. 2nd Mandrel not inserted all the way. I would check number 2 first.
