Craftsman 42 " rider Kohler 22 HP, Hydrostat Model # 917.986410 S/N 022614A002537
I believe I cooked my stator and amp meter pegged all the way to right, fried that I guess. While engine on ( for a short time wires going to amp meter are warm.)
Who knows what else is fried, I seen a little smoke coming out of flywheel for about 5 -10 seconds. This all started when I tried to charge my weak or dead batter with a batter charger
and possibly had too many amps cranked up on the charger.
Thanks in advance.

Vey unlikely
The charging system can handle 20 amps and not many battery charges will put 20 A out
However if you hooked it up backwards then that is a different matter
No manuals from Craftsman
Kohler engine manual is a free download from Kohler

For engine with that serial number you need Kohler PN 24 153 30-S.

Thank you, although If I'm reading correctly the manual for the Kohler 22 HP twin engine calls for RTV as a gasket, what am I missing . Do I need the rubber or paper gaskets as well as the RTV . Manual also states to torque the 4 bolts to 85 in pounds. I will replace both gaskets , the one is leaking a small amount on the muffler pipe and smokes for about a minute after warm up then dissipates. Appreciate the help.

What the SM is referring to the stamp steel rockers are sealed with RTV and the plastic rocker cover are seal with o-ring gasket; not both.

Kohler update to the stamp steel and RTV to try to reduce leakage but even then sometime they revert back to the CV plastic covers as a last resort.

I currently have a CV23/25 that is leaking oil and it is not the rocker cover or the head gasket but appears to a crack in the oil return port. Awaiting the customer to bring in a head donor engine to see if it resolves the problem. I will have to wait until I pull the head as if it is a CV23 or CV25; no decals on the engine.

Thank you, I'm weighing all options at this point.
