Long crank before starting & delay on shutting off when killing ignition

My Fastrak w/ the 19hp Kawasaki engine has a couple of issues that may or may not be related. I have to crank it over about 4 times at ~6-7 seconds each before it'll fire off when cold. Runs like a champ immediately when it does. Choke is engaged and I did smell fuel today when trying.

Also, when killing it, I'll switch it off and pull the key and it'll keep running for 4-5 seconds before dying.

1st problem seems like it'd be a carb issue. 2nd maybe a fuel shutoff solenoid, but there's nothing mentioned in the service manual about one. That being said, I'm not certain the manual I have is the exact one for me model, which is I don't know how old.

Both of these have been going on for a while now. I'd sure like them fixed. Any pointers are appreciated.

Sounds like the fuel anti backfire solenoid is not working on the bottom of the carburetor bowl. They tend to get sticky and act up.

I'll pull the carb and give it a once over. Would this solenoid be the problem with the 1st or 2nd issue?

What's the best way to clean a carb these days? I hear that the old dunks that used to work well have been neutered by havin the most effective chemicals removed.

I use Berryman Chemtool B-12 along with an old toothbrush. Spray the parts and inspect them carefully. The anti-backfire solenoid gets sticky from fuel breaking down. The additives in the fuel gradually turn to a sticky shellac. No need to "soak" parts, just clean them well.

Another often overlooked area is the fuel inlet and float needle area. remove the float and needle, then splay cleaner back and for through the tiny opening.

A very good product to use in your fuel is Marvel Mystery oil. It was developed many years ago when gasoline was poorly refined. I mix a pint in my 5-gallon supply can every time I fill it up.
