I see why now everyone says to just buy a new one already on the axle.I spent two hours removing cleaning repacking replacing only to find the trans will roll back fine now but locks up rolling forward .the grease in mine was hardened up and I think when I cleaned it I took what little bit of grease there was on the thrust washers off and now it is sticking.I am going to take it down again to see just what is going on but got a used trans coming that is in good condition.do they even sell rebuild kits for them?looks fun to do if you like c and e clips.should I have used spray grease on the clutch washers and then packed it with grease?there were no metal shavings in the case and the pinion gear was just a little loose but not enough to cause any problems. The grease was shot .has anyone had any sucess working on one of them?

Don't exactly know which transmission you are talking about, but my guess is that you installed the drive gears on the axles backwards. Try flipping the gears around and see if that solves the problem. If not post the mowers model and serial number so we can see what you are talking about. Have done what you are talking about hundreds of times and we should be able to solve this.

it is a model L21zsnc the trans is a single speed toro type which has the gears on the axle the mesh with the splines on the inside of the wheel.I only took off one side to remove the axle and i thought the same thing the gear was on wrong so I changed the right side gear around.which way do the gears go on the axle?I will take off the other side tomorrow and change it around to see what I got.I understand how it works with the gear and the moon key but it is very possible the side I did not take off is on wrong.one other thing at one time both wheels were spinning in a different direction When I changed the gear they were spinning the same and would free wheel but when I engage the trans it locks up solid
