Hello, Im have problems with a Kubota 902 3 cylinder diesel thats on my rtv 900. It has a loud tapping/ chatter coming from the exhaust manifold area. I checked all the valves and they are in spec. Anyone have any idea what this could be? The tapping gets loud and faster as you increase the engine rpms.

Hate to say it but it sounds like a loose wristpin bushing that's allowing the piston to slap the head. My dad had an Olds diesel with the same sound, I swore it was a lifter or rocker arm until I got the head off and the #5 piston was rotating while I cleaned the carbon off it.

With it running loosen the injector lines to each cylinder one by one until it skips on that cylinder... When the noise goes away that's the problem cylinder... If it doesn't go away it isn't a wrist pin and it's more than likely a top end noise not a bottom end noise. A rod bearing noise or loose piston skirt will go away too when you kill the affected cylinder...
