I have a Kohler command twin cylinder engine on leaf vacuum. checking for leave season, I note at full throttle , I only have 12.25 volts dc. Checked stator voltage which was 40 volts ac. Checked continuity for battery wire from regulator to battery, is ok. I replaced regulator, no change. I did note that regulator has no ground wire as I have seen in other engines. Should I run a wire from regulator mount bolt to a good ground to see if voltage increases? Thanks for any help.

Yes because the regulator has to have a return ground path.
Yes, the regulator has to have ground wire run to a bolt to a metal surface of the engine to be effective. Attach the other end to one of the regulator mount bolts. Normally it only takes a short wire to one of the fan shroud/top cover bolts.
Ok thanks to both of you. Pouring rain today, will try tomorrow. I am optimistic particularly where stator is putting out 40 volts ac, regulator is new and b as they wire is checked out
Well the rate n let up so I added a ground wire. Walaaaaa! All isworking, 12.75 volts dc at idle and 14 volts at high throttle, thanks again for your help.
