I have a Kawasaki FH580V 19hp engine that bogs/backfires for a few seconds when I engage the mower deck. Sometimes after a few seconds it then revs to full speed and other times it just continues to back fire and run at a reduced speed. When its not underload it revs and runs ok. I've check the compression and both cylinders are over 100 psi, I've cleaned out the carb, replaced the fuel filter and spark plug and set the valve lash to 005. I've also check to make sure the blades on the deck aren't bent. Now of the above have cured the symptom. I believe the backfire is through the carb. I'm thking it could be the intake valve, but would I still be getting over 100 PSI compression if the vale wasn't seating? Or shoudl I be looking somewhere else for the problem.

I read no mention of you changing the air filter. Sometimes, even if the air filter "looks" clean, it "might not" be any good. When/if paper filters get wet, the cells in the paper expand, and even when it drys out, the expanded cells in the paper, restricts air flow. try changing it.

I did also clean out the pre and main filter. I've tried running it both with and without the filter(s) and get the same symptom. I trying to see if I have to go to the next level and pull the heads to check the valves and/or replace a timing coil. I'm hoping someones has had a similar experience and can give some incite before I rip futher into it.

Check to see if the governor is opening the throttle properly. I would start by resetting the governor, due to the slow reaction time you posted.

I can tell the instant I engage the electric mowers Clutch, the throttle is pulled fully opened. I'll loosen the engines governer clamp later today and see if its set to factory specs. Thanks for the idea.
Once the engine does stop sputtering and revs to full speed under load it runs just fine. Today I cut a yard for 45 minutes without disenaging the clutch. It was only when I first engage the load. It also happens if the engine is cold or hot. Does this symptom rule out anything. It be nice to rule things out as much as determing what it may be. The one thing I haven't done is take the heads off and clean out the carbon and take a look at the valves. I'm trying to do all the stuff that is realatively easy first.

Another thing you could check is the deck spindle and idler pulleys. If they are not turning freely they may be back loading the engine. Make sure that brakes are fully releasing the spindle pulleys

That was one of the first things I checked. All are moving freely, but not woobly or warn out. I even put a new set of blades on to make sure nothing was out of balance. thanks again. john

Try removing the belt and then engaging the PTO. If the problem occurs we will know the it is not being caused by the deck. Belt could be worn riding too low in the pulley.

Is your deck a mulching deck? These decks take a lot of power. I have seen some cases of what you speak of. Blades should be engaged off your cutting area and at low throttle to help save your clutch then raise the throttle to operating speed, "THEN" enter your cutting area with full power/RPM, and the engine should not load up. When you engage the clutch while in heavy grass, the throttle is open, but the RPM's are restricted by the grass and at full throttle, the engine wants to fall on its face because it can't burn all the fuel that a wide open throttle is feeding it.

I just joined the forum, so not sure if you got it fixed already but I had a similar problem and it ended up being a bad fuel filter, or fuel pump vent being drity not sure which I rplaced filter and clleaned vent. Have you had any issues with cold starting problems? Thats what I have. mine is 12 years old with 450 hours. runs fine once it starts?
