Just purchased a new troy-bilt lawnmower - smoking and smell?

I am new to owning a lawnmower, as I used to pay someone. I put in the oil that came with the lawnmower up to the prescribed level and then put in the gas. When trying to run it, it smokes and smells like burning. Is this normal for a new lawnmower? Did I do something wrong?

is smoke coming out of the exhaust? or from under the engine.
is it a push mower or ride on?
Could be paint burning off, but not at all likely.

It is self-propelled. it is coming out the same side as the oil was put in and the front. It gets very hot too.

You didn't spill any did you? A little bit can smoke pretty good.

Any signs of a leak?
And i would check oil level one more time. Is it a briggs engine?

Honda engine. I might have spilled a little. Also, I followed the instructions and put in enough oil to cover the top of the corrugated dip stick, nothing more than that. That is per instructions.

You did not add oil to the gas? Did you by accident? I know someone whose young kid did that thinking he was helping his dad out and it smoked pretty bad.
A piston ring may not be seated propperly. Run it for a while and see if it improves. If not call the dealer you purchased from and have them pick it up and take care of it. If you bought it at a box store take it back and ask for a new one.

Some smoking when brand new is normal. Continued smoke is bad. If you bought from a dealer call right away. If you bought from Lowes or Home Depot you have 30 days to return. In that case I'd run it a little more and see what happens.
