Yes the junk seems to be taking over the forum. There's one thread today about a Gay Nude Date.

Yes something can be done but it takes more the removing the threads, you have to remove the problem also.

Okay, I belong to way too many forums(about 15), and this just doesn't happen anywhere else. Something in the forum software is allowing spam makers to join and post. It seems that prevention relies on a manual step in the registration process. I know it means more work for the moderators, but it may be the only way to stop this.

What moderators?? As far as I know there are only two active administrators. As far as the forum software allowing spam makers to join, I don't believe that has anything to do with the problem. The New account activation is probably set up for user activation and isn't moderated by the administrator so anyone can join at anytime under any name with any email address.

I also belong to several forums and this is the only one affected by this type of garbage. I just found it interesting that Breana readily moves threads from one location to the other, but nothing is happening to the junk. Maybe I'm missing something. I would think that the administrator could ban the sources of the threads and quickly remove the thread. Maybe it would atleast slow down this stuff. Just my opinion. This post was surposed to be in the junk thread. I have no idea how it got here. I tried to delete but to no avail. Sorry

I am a Administrator on a couple of other forums and what you say about banning the source is the first step in controlling the problem but it needs to be followed up with a couple of more steps to be successful. Removing the threads only works if The Administrator uses those other steps. If all that happens is thread removal the situation will only become worse as it has here.
fastback I hope you don't mind but I quoted you from your post in the members forum.

About all that can be done now is to flag & report any postings that should be looked at...
The small triangle in every post.

I have to think that there is someone that is upset with us, that they are spending a lot of time directing everything they can find our way...
I suspect when the 'fun' wares off, it should slow down... :smile:KennyV

You can flag all the postings you want but when it comes right down to it you need more moderation here on the forum. I don't believe it's all coming from one individual or one source, if that was the case or the problem it could be solved in a heartbeat.
I've seen this kinda of thing happen on other forums to the point that they were shut down and it takes days to clean it up before the forums could be brought back online. Once these entity's get a foot hold it's hard to stop. I think it will most likely get worse before it gets better.

I hope he's right and I'm wrong also. I've been seeing these postings start here and do nothing but increase in volume in the last few weeks and unless something is done quickly to stop it I don't know where it will go.
One of the problems I see happening is the reduction in membership postings from the veteran membership, and people getting really fed up with the junk and not spending as much time here and posting as they once were, and those could be signs of what's to come.

Yes, the whole point of spammers isn't to get people to buy parka coats and watch pornography, it is to put people off the forum.

You turn if you want to - But this veteran is not for turning!

I suspect that most if not all those that have had Alabama for a location... are Not from Alabama & that they would be from the same IP...

It has been too long, I can't remember ... When you first sign up do you have to give an eMail address that you have to go to in order to complete your registration?
If not it is ONE step that could be made to stop this, there are several others that are more selective... :smile:KennyV

I have noticed the pattern that they are all seemingly from Alabama!

Doubt it though, but it makes you wonder why every one almost is choosing that... Are they all the same person ?

I can't remember whether you have to confirm your email address... I think you do, but I couldn't be sure, as it has been quite a while since I had to join!

Yes you have to supply an Email address when you register but Blocking an Email address is not going to solve the problem. They can manufacture email addresses as fast as you can block them. There's at least three steps that have to be taken and after it's all said and done it can be undone by the individual.

Yep, you have to have some intelligence to keep coming back like they are.

They are ruining a good forum with no remorse for their actions, and that is the worst bit.

Surely there is some legal action that can be taken ?

Spamming forums is an offense here in the UK and you can get punished for it.

Yea, there not stupid. There main purpose is to do just that, ruin a good forum. I've seen this same thing happen on RTR, Easyracer and other forums. I believe it was Easyracer that was shut down for over a month to clean up the mess they had because it was so bad.
If it continues here you will see a lot of the veteran members leaving the forum and when that happens others will follow, as it is I think that has already taking place because some of the veterans have already disappeared, either that or there just setting back to see what happens. The noobs are hanging on in hopes that things turn around.
When I signed on this morning I counted 12 members in the currently active users or members that were spammers, so I don't believe it has ended.

I always felt that the source of this was from the same person. It just seems that he/they are putting an awful lot of work into disrupting the forum. I also would not be surprised if that person is right now reading this thread and enjoying the attention he is getting.

I have noticed a few Veterans becoming more distant recently, but not just that, there are also less new members staying on the forum now I think.

What I mean is a lot of people who post in the New Members section don't return after their initial welcome.

I just pray this forum doesn't get to the stage where there are only a few members left in a sea of spam.

I think if you want this to end the Admin is going to have to make an adjustment in the registration process. To my knowledge there are three ways member can register. One way is by using the User registration setting another is an automatic setting and the third is going through administration approval process where the admin has to approve all applicants.
The Admin approval is time consuming for the administration but it would stop all the spammers.
Lawn and Landscape Forum, ( forumotion ) Has made available to its Administrators the use a security protocol over the entire board that checks in real time the content of all posts, comments and private messages of new members with less than a week on your forum and prohibits them from posting external links or emails.

To put it simply it works a lot like your bank and you when you buy things at say the gas station or a store or pay your monthly bills, it the bank monitors every dollar spent. They know how and what you buy and pay and if something or an unusual purchase is made that doesn't compute correctly your notified.

There system basically works the same, the active safety system works continuously in the background and analysis in real time connections and actions of forum members and intervenes if a suspicious action is detected. (spam)

It will act in real time to acquire, identify and prohibit the registration in the forum for the most commonly used spam usernames on the web.
It gives the administrator the ability to allow or not external scripts forms (not developed by Forumotion) to post on the forum. It will prevent any external script to post content on the forum and keeping the forum protected from spam.

I would agree normally but it's 6:09 am here and there are 19 members online and 16 are spammers, ( All from Alabama) How can you ignore something like that??

Muhammad says he's working on adding an automated spam deletion system since it's gotten to be such an issue here and that's great and it will probably take care of a small percentage of the problem but not the whole problem.

AOL, Yahoo, Mozilla and all Forums have spam blockers but guess what, even theirs doesn't take care of only a small percentage of the problems. Nobody is bullet proof. If you want the problem solved it will take a great deal of continual moderation.

The problem is that the jerk(s) aren't going away, yes the spam-o-matic will stop some but the percentage that will get through will be greater than those denied I'm afraid.

I've found that most of the spam found in forums is automated and the people behind it are simply playing a numbers game. I haven't noticed any targeted spam here yet.

Not really...
Just like LAST year, Winter has very little traffic... Not many mowers running & having problems during the winter...
Come Spring there will be a surge again of New members & old returns...
Without the negative cry babies around, telling everyone to stop asking the same old questions over & over.... We should have a stellar Spring...

And speaking of past negative members... I noticed one posted back, after the Spam could no longer be spread all over.... Hmmmmm... what a coincidence?? ... But then I miss him as much as I miss the Spam, didn't bother to read ether.

The SpamOrator is working magnificently... I love it. Has to be a daily frustration to the one responsible for directing all the crap at these forums.... :smile:KennyV

You know there are only so many questions you can ask in terms of lawn equipment without repeating questions. I can think of many subjects that are in the same boat, for example, I am a avid wood worker and have subscribed to a number of woodworking magazines. The mags cycle and cover the same material from season to season. I have yet to see complaints. If it were not for repeated data most mags would go out of business quickly.

I have always believed there are no dumb questions. You are dumb if you don't ask.

I really don't understand the reasoning behind that statement, Winter has very little traffic... not that it's wrong mind you but it would seem to me that when people are unable to get out and mow lawns that there would be more activity on the forum not less.icon_scratch.png I know that during season the business operators are to busy to spend much time on the forums.

The SpamOrator is working great but I sure wouldn't have it listed in with the statistics so everyone could see how bad the forum is being hit by spammers.

I'm sure it's frustrating for the spammer to see all their efforts failing... And it is nice to see how effective an automatic system, properly operating can be....

As for increased activity when fewer folks are using power equipment... When your Not running engines, they tend to have no 'noticeable' problems... :smile:KennyV

I'm sure it's frustrating for the spammer to see all their efforts failing... but are they failing? Have you checked the photo section lately. Dryproma has created 50 albums, Sypeheedero 32, Stoontabe 16, all are spammers and are online at the present. Maybe it's stopped them from posting Temporarily but it hasn't done much for the photo section and there links.

At least there aren't any spammy threads - That's the main thing.

Being the main thing? I don't know about that? Aerovalia has 65 photo albums listed and he's just one of many. I just wonder what all of these photo albums are doing to the forum.

The graphic side of anti spam is a very complex type of filter... that may be difficult to deal with.
That may be easiest dealt with a visual determination & report a problem system.

The larger percent of the people on the forums don't spend a lot of time in the photo section compared to the printed blogs... So as Jmurray indicated.... It's at a much More tolerable level. :smile:KennyV

I hope they don't spend a lot of time in the photo section because it sure has its share of Porn sites and advertisements. You should check some of them out Disappointed.gif some are really bad.

Well to begin with there not in the Gallery. They're albums created by spammers and there are not any photo's within them. All are created all with the same Photo cover and as you know a photo album has to have a name before it can be posted and the names are Links that lead to search engines full of porn sites.
