Has there been any recent work done on the mower? As it sounds like either someone has reverse the PTO switch connector or wired the PTO switch wrong. Most of these connectors are keyed unless it was changed in the past.

Buy an OEM switch. There were a few serial number breaks on this model I think. Make sure they got you the right switch for your serial number.

According to JDparts the Z445 used the same Delta 6204 switch for all serial numbers; although, they have different knobs. A NC/DT/DT switch
