I have a John Deere X-739 complete with the mulching kit and a Gator mulching blade. It works well on leaves in the Fall, but clogs when I try to use it in Spring and Summer when the grass is growing. Is this a common problem or does anyone have any suggestions on improving its "mulching grass" capabilities?

Get rid of the gator blades. They do work well on leaves but leaves are usually dried up and easy to break down when you cut them versus cutting fresh grass that is still high in moisture. I don't know how often you cut the grass but maybe try to cut more often.

I have the 54HC deck on my X739 and the stock blades that come with the JD mulching kit work great on my grass which is usually less than dry here in the Pacific Northwest. Even on long grass they work surprisingly well with no clogs that I've ever observed. I do take the deck off almost weekly to use the tractor for other projects and will scrap off any grass buildup (which isn't very much) from the deck before putting it back on for my next mowing.

Have never tried gator blades as I don't see the need for them.
