Im looking to buy a mower and customize it but im only 14. my grandma has an older john deere she said she'll just give me, but she said the transmission went out of it. She had somebody look at it and he said it was about a $75 fix which sounds pretty cheap considering im gettin it for free. but i was wondering if anybody knows where i could find a transmission or whatever? thanks for your time and help.

Free is good. (most of the time:wink:) Speaking as one who has brought more than a couple of old mowers back to life, you've picked yourself out a great project. Be sure to share posts and pictures of your progress.

Do you know which John Deere model you're looking at?

I'd say start here to look for information about parts.

John Deere - Parts Catalog

From that you can get the parts break down and part numbers of the stuff you need, and go from there in finding them.

Have fun, and be sure to say thank you to grandma.

Cool. If it was me, I'd start by trying to hook up with who ever told your grandma that it was a $75 fix and see if they can tell you what it was that it needed. Do a little trouble shooting of your own to see what it might need. Making sure it runs is the next good place to turn to. You wouldn't want to sink a lot of money into the drive train first if it won't run. Then put stx38 in the model number on the John Deere parts catalog to get the drop down menu of choices. There was a black deck and a yellow deck version of that tractor. Look at the diagrams and parts lists and see if you can find the thing that'll get you fixed and going again. Use the part number to find yourself the best deal, or share with your parts source.

And have fun with it.

Better find out what is wrong with it before looking for a new tranny. Might be a simple fix. Post the model numbers, description of the problem, etc. on here and someone will know about this unit and far more than likely help you as much as you can help them.
