I have a John Deere 400 the only numbers I can find on it is a Product Identification Number C400l 192567 M. It is spaced out like that. It needs transmission fluid. It is red so I assume it is ATF. Do any of you know which kind of fluid it would take? I think the mower may be from the 1980's era. It has a hydrostatic transmission.
Thanks for any help

Appears to be Hy-Gard J20C/J20D per the fluid chart I have here.

Most JD mowers use Hy-Gard Low-Viscosity J20D fluid.

What he said.
You need to be careful. Some ATF fluids are not compatible with some seals and some hydraulic fluids are not compatible with some seals. Some pumps are not compatible with the friction modifiers in some ATF fluids.
