Is it time to say goodbye to my 14SB?

The deck has a few cracks and a few pieces near the engine area have broken off. Today the rear wheel fell off and the axle bolt is broken in the deck. Engine, tranny, BBC seem fine. I saw a used deck on ebay for $150. I don't know whether I should replace with used deck or pay $700 for a new honda.

It depends upon how much you love that particular mower (disclaimer: I now have 5 of them).

How much free time do you have and how handy are you? And what is the condition of everything else on the mower? You could obtain a used deck (or a whole another mower as I have done a number of times) and swap everything over during the winter and be ready for next season. If you choose to do this, it is also a good time to renew/replace any other worn parts while everything is apart (drive belt, worn bushings/bearings, clean & relube everything, etc). Possibly disassemble the transaxle and repack it with new grease. Then you should have a "like new" mower that is ready to mow for several mower seasons.

You could also watch for another used mower to get by with while your Deere is out of service.

I'd go try out one of the Hondas before you buy one if you decide to go that route. Decide if you like the handle controls or not. That either seals the deal or kills it for a lot of people.

Thanks for the great info. Sadly I think I'm ready to move on. I'm not handy enough to do too much on this mower.
