Is it normal to see grease leakage on a self propelled mower transmission case?

My transmission part number is 589600601. On the shaft that the wheels connect to, I see evidence of grease on over half of the outside of the black case. I'm not sure what signs to look for that the transmission might be on its way out.

Some lubricant migration is not uncommon on these as they age. I've seen them go for years because they are packed with a lightweight grease that will seep, especially in hot weather.
