Hello all, I'm 67 this July but older physically (anyway I feel that way) but new to this forum and vintage garden tractors. I own 2 MTD 960 garden tractors and want to repower them both so I've joined a few forums looking for answers. Thanks for accepting me and for all the info I hope to glean. Oh, I'm in Madisonville and hope to find others near me that share an interest in old tractors especially MTD 960 and 990's
I am not particularly familiar with those tractors & when sold down here they would have been rebadged.
What I have found is when replacing sv engines with new OHV engines I often have to turn them 90 deg and run the engine across the frame because the OHV engines are too long & foul on the hood .
Also note that engine Hp rates are now realistic so an old 20 Hp is roughly equivalent to a new 17 Hp.
Some of the smaller V twins will fit where the SV singles used to go quite nicely you will just have to make up an exhaust system to fit.
