I COULD USE SOME MORE HELP.

I FINELY GOT THE CARB FIXED ON MY CRAFTSMAN LAWN TRACTOR (917.255720). It has a Tecumseh engine # 143.406022. However I still have the governor problem. I CAN NOT REGULATE THE THROTTLE BY THE LEVER ON THE DASH . i CAN CHOKE IT BUT CAN'T LOWER OR RAISE THE SPEED OF THE ENGINE. sO i STILL NEED SOMEONE TO TELL EXACTLY HOW TO HOOK UP THE GOVERNOR. WHICH HOLES THE SPRINGS AND RODS GO IN ON THE THROTTLE AND THE 2 LEVERS OF THE THROTTLE ON THE ENGINE.

So my pic was not good?

Mr. Fish I am sorry but none of the pictures I have seen does not show the type of governor that is on this motor. There are two vertical shafts that have holes in them and I do not have control of the throttle with the lever on the dash. I need to see where the springs go and where the rod goes to the on the throttle.
If you go back to the I put on the first thread and look close you can see the 2 shafts.

I just thought that was the right way to do it

Why? I have been looking around for the thread where you actually put up a pic, but I wasted 5 minutes or so, so I officially give up.....The one pic I put up matched your engine, but I refuse to spend any more time on this.....Maybe someone else here has a bit more patience....

Mr Fish It is under "I REALLY NEED SOME HELP" the 16 thread down

Post all numbers from your engine and I'll try helping you out, not just engine model number as Tecumseh has so many engines like everyone else. Example ecv 100 or lev1oo and numbers from carburetor as well. The number you posted is craftsman number I need all Tecumseh numbers.

No my pic out of the book shows how the throttle/gov linkages should be hooked up, but the control plate you have on your bunch of pics do not show what controls the choke, and it is real hard to get anywhere, as all of the pics to help you are on a different thread.
But your basic gov. linkage setup is on the pic I put up, you still will have other issues as you are using parts from other engines.

OK, that part in pic #1, put that loose spring in the end hole on that lever, and install on the top of the carb, making sure that metal tab pointing down sits in the slot to work the choke when you move the cable all of the way forward.

Fish

Fish

The pic I put up just had the throttle control at the top of the carb, you have it hooked to a cable. That appears to be the difference, which is minimal.

Mr. Fish THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR HELP. I did that and the governor keeps it running full speed all the time no matter where I put the control on the dash. Does that mean new carb.

Well, not really. You should be easily able to control the speed by working the throttle manually on top of the carb. If you cannot, then the throttle plate has lost it's screws and the plate is laying about in there somewhere. If you can, then you need to look at the gov. and the linkages, as the engine revs, there is an internal spool
that works the gov. arm and makes it "slow" the throttle back down. And a correct adjustment ensures the correct balance for optimal rpms, and when the unit
has a change of load, deck engage, going uphill, etc.....

And if the internal spool is farked up, then you will require some internal surgery.

This is why I ask for details, history, numbers, etc.

I don't wish anyone to waste time or money, which is why I like to have the info needed to help folks, and well, you have all of the things you need to figure this out,
I think.....

OK I did that and when I put the spring on it and move the throttle up on the dash that that moves the throttle on the carb wide open and I can't seem to slow the motor down so I turn it off.

well can you hold the throttle closed by hand? or hold onto the gov rod and control the rpms from there?

Kind of important questions.....

When the throttle control is up to where max for cutting I can not move the throttle with the gov rod . The only way I can move it is when the throttle control is about half way.

oK i AM BACK FOR SOME GUIDANCE. i PURCHASED CARB. FOR THIS TRACTOR. wHEN ITS RUNNING i AM GOING TO EST RPMS AT ABOUT 300 RPMS AND THEN IT WILL RUN ABOUT 600 RPMS THIS IS A GUESS. DO U THINK THIS IS CARB ADJUSTMENTS OR SOMETHING ELSE ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY WELCOME THANK YOU.:confused2:

Low idle speed for that engine is 1600 RPM's and high speed is 3200 RPM's.

#27

T

Thank you Rivets could you guide me on the fact that the slow idle screw and fast idle screw in the bottom of the carb do not do anything to change the RPM .Also where would I get Tac to measure RPMs on a lawn mower engine

#28

R

Rivets

Have you read over the section on carb adjustment in the manual I posted, particularly pages 15-16. This is the procedure which I follow. The idle mixture and high speed mixture screws will not change your RPM's very much. Their job is to control the amount of fuel for various speeds. Your idle speed screw controls RPM's at slow speed and a properly set governor. This is covered in the section entitled "Governors and Linkages) in the manual. This explains everything much better than I can. Tachometers for small engines are out their and rather expensive. Best bet if you really want to get one would be to look for one on line. I use one called a VibraTach, but don't recommend it unless you can find one to instruct you how to use it. Electronic one are $$$$ and unless you are in the business not a wise investment. TinyTacs work also.

I would like some one too explain to me, after I just put a bran new carburetor on this engine and get it run I try too run it around the yard a few times, I put in reverse and nothing. I put in every gear and I get nothing. I checked the belt. and how it is routed to make sure it is right and it is. The belt is turning and so are all the pullies. The large pully on the transaxel is also tunring but shifting gears makes no difference.WHAT COULD HAVE GONE WRONG
