Hydro filter change on Z-Master

Having all sorts of fun & games trying to do an oil & filter change on the hydros .
The filters have a 9/16 hex on them for a socket , well & good but one just twisted off and the other looks like it is going to do the same thing
Did the first one cold so tried the second ona hot hydro bit still does not look like budging
Is there some trick to it ?
I really do not want to be laying under the mower chopping out filter elements with 1.5 Litres of hot oil above it .
Should I do this a lot more frequently than 500 hrs to prevent them fusing into the case ?
Did Toro put some sort of sealant on them from the factory ( this is the first change AFAIK )

Come on Bert you know the routine by now. Equipment numbers help us find the info as we are not there holding your hand.

But the filter probably was installed with a dry seal and it has stuck now. I was taught to use oil on the sealing ring when I install new filters. But yes I have ran across filters that had to mangle to get them off.

I’m guessing that those are the plastic type screw in filters.

AFAIK there was only one oil filter used across the entire range of Z-masters
However as you asked
Model 74952
Serial 31300488
Oil filter is 117-0390
Which as MParr suggested is the internal filter built on a plastic base and it doubles as the oil drain .
I have 7 of these in my service run, 5 with the same customer & they are all due or slightly overdue for oil & filter changes.
Unfortunately these are the overnight service machines & most are used 7 days a week so if I pull them out tonight, they have to be ready to be picked up at 4 am the following morning .
He does not do big hours with any of them, some times only 1/2 hour a day but the crews work up to 60 miles away and usually take the mowers home with them.
For servicing the owner goes to their nearest work site & swaps trailers , then drops the trailer off at my shop and I service what ever is in the trailer that needs servicing. a bit hard because 3 of his Z master do not have the module wired in any more so there is no hour meters

Thank you as I haven't come across this filter and all I can go by is to lookup the equipment to see what was used. Don't mean to seem to a pain but it helps me a whole to know what I referring to.

So far the only filter similar that MPar posted is the ones on the JD Ztraks but they have a square hole which can be a pain to remove at times too. But as I said someone probably installed without oiling the o-rings.

Just was not sure if they would respond better to a rattle gun or a breaker bar
Not sure if I should use some hot air gun heat or penetrant
Like everything now days, no clean access and unless the mower is on a 2 or 4 post lift, the tech ( ie me ) is going to be almost directly underneath the hot oil.
Funny enough , no mention of the filters in the tech manual, only in the owners manual and even then very scant information.
The mower comes back Monday so I have to do it Monday night after that it will not be back for a month or longer
If they were metal then I would have no problems with using the rattle gun but from experience when used on plastic even on the lowest setting the guns tend the break plastic bits before they loosen them .

A rattle gun or impact wrench will probably break the molded nut off. A tight fitting six point socket on a pull handle will be your best bet. You still may have to use a chisel and hammer to tap around the outside. A silicone based penetrating fluid might help.

Bert the service manual for the Parker HB series hydros is a separate manual. In the tools needed for disassembly there is no mention of a 9/16 socket instead they refer to a 14mm socket. Maybe this what the filter needs instead of a 9/16 since 9/16 is 14.3mm. Worth at least checking since plastic is so soft. It might have sheared off due to the 9/16 being a little loose.

BTW that service manual only has general info on the hydros.

Never read the "tools required" section, lesson learned
I would like to know how I measure 60 inch lbs for the dip stick / breather cap.
Never expected a US hydro to have a metric thread on the filter though .
Odd that Toro specify 1.5 Litres and Parker state 2.7 quarts as the oil capacity so looks like I better get another bottle of 15 W 50 full synthetic just in case .
Interesting that parker also do not specify any oil either type or viscosity .
We will see what happens Monday night
In any case it will be messy
