My friend has been looking for a replacement motor and can only find a 24 hp Briggs that looks the same as the old one, would this work as an exact replacement? Thanks in advance.

Generally you don't want to go less in Horsepower.
Instead of going off looks, if he can provide the model and type numbers of the engine, me or we can look and see if or what engine replaces that engine and go from there.

We have looked for the Briggs serial number but have no clue where it is, motor is covered with dusty residue. Any ideas on where to look? Thanks

Looks like possibly an Intek, so engine model number should be on the valve cover opposite the one with the fuel pump.

Hey, thanks so much, I will hang on to that info.

He needs to measure the PTO shaft diameter & Length
Instructions are on Small Engine Warehouse web page
Nothing else is important if you are staying within the same brands as alternators , Carbs & engine controls will all swap over if need be.
However you can get caught with the oil filter fouling on the side rails when swapping from one brand to another .
I have an Ariens Zoom in the workshop right now looking for an engine with a swept back or hang down oil filter because none of the poke out ones will fit.

I would not much lower on HP. Briggs does indicate they have a 27 hp carburated engine or you might can go with the 28 hp EFI engine but having the model and type numbers off the old would help.

Note: On some rocker cover they have been installed upside down during a valve adjustment.

Thank you for the help, valve covers had the visible number, I will post them now.

Got the rocker cover info today and here it is, this engine was ran with the choke on and likely washed the cylinder walls. Oil and plugs have been changed but still runs poorly. Model # is 49M777, type 512205, code 111011YG

Briggs shows the replacement as

49M8771046

It appears unavailable from most places, i couldn't find any superceded part numbers for it either, Star tech or someone else might can.

PD shows it superceding to 49S877-0008-G1 which is also showing out of stock 49T877-0004-G1 may be a viable engine option and is showing in stock at PD. 49E877-0005-G1 could be usable but will need a different muffler both due to EFI and also different engine series as the original so muffler won't transfer

Hmmm, IL my PD source is showing it available. Now of course its the PD out Ohio.

@StarTech Interesting that I am getting the exclamation point triangle with the 49S877-0008-G1

It possible that your PD account is defaulting to a different warehouse. Back in October and November I had a fellow tech on another forum that the 793880 camshafts in the PD Mid West warehouse came in stock nearly a month before they made it to the Ohio warehouse. It took a while for us to figure this out too.

I suspect that PD is no longer doing the ship from other alternate warehouse feature that used to be shown with the sweeping arrow symbol in the order. So it now sounds like they are not giving us the option of shipping from alternate warehouses. I am positive I am defaulting to Iowa since all my orders are coming out of that warehouse., but use to be linked to the Ohio warehouse.

Well I don't go directly through PD anymore since they decide I wasn't buying enough from them; therefore, closed my direct account but my current distributor does. I still access them through my Power Portal account for inventory checking. I just couldn't see paying them at a 10% off retail when my distributor gives a 20% off retail on the same parts shipped from the same warehouse.

To some accountant it probably makes sense to sell the parts to another distributor at a lower cost than give me the 20% discount.

There is a theory that because invoicing costs money then you try to avoid invoicing for single items or small orders .
Using this theory you optimise profits by only filling big orders ( that is where those minimum spend numbers come from ) so you encourage the big spenders with big discounts & discourage small spenders by charging more and even padding out the bill with extra charges.
Before we had the delivery business I tried to get my principle contractor to open multiple accounts for trade housers , production companies & prop makers, because these businesses work multiple movies, commercials & stage shows at the same time , but have to invoice things like couriers out to each individual customer , a bigger job than most would imagine .
My manager would not do this because it cost "$ X" per account where as in reality all it meant was the booker typing in a different 6 letter code , the computer did the rest.
So when we kicked off we did just that nearly every customer had at least 3 accounts and some of the PR companies would open & close over 100 accounts a year .
This alone scored us $ 2,000,000 a year .

Well when I order from Briggs its goes through A&I which then places the same small order through PD which ships the items directly to ESE then they bill A&I which in turn bills ESE. Nothing get warrantied because B&S requires ESE to go through a local dealer which refuses to honor the warranties because they didn't get an initial cut of the profits even through get well paid for honoring warranties. I just warranty in house sales myself to heck with the local Briggs dealers.

BTW computers don't gets wages or commissions.
