Greetings all,

Though I dearly want to buy a zero turn, at present the budget doesn't allow it. My local dealer (from whom I've bought a couple of chainsaws and who's well known for being honest and fair) has a GTH2454T mower which, after talking about it for 10 mins, they agreed to bring by so that I could use it for a while to decide if it was right for me. I mowed with it today and it seems pretty great. It seems quite fast, cuts well, turns sharply and started right up. I stress that it "seems" since the last rider mower I owned was probably 25 years ago. And, since in the past two weeks I've already spent 15-20 hours pushing a 24" craftsman, probably any rider would seem GREAT! ;-)

So, I'd love some feedback.

They are asking $1700 for the mower. I found the same mower had sold for about $900 on ebay (though the run hours weren't listed - perhaps it had much more use). That seems a low price though; other sources offer them in the $1800-2000 range. It seems, doing some searching on the net that this mower was made in 2006. A 7 year old mower for $1700? Are these considered good Huskies? Doesn't 155 hours of use seem pretty low? Are the run hour gauges reliable?

Interestingly, the mower also comes with a 48" snow thrower attachment. These things alone seem to sell for about $1200-1400. Problem is I already have a dedicated snow thrower (though it's only 24" and a Troy-bilt - pretty worn after only 5 years of moderate use). And lots of people on the net argue that the tractor attached throwers don't work as well, aren't as maneuverable, as the dedicated, walk-behind ones.

Anyway, the mower itself seems good and strong, I like and trust the dealer, but I'd hate to have something serious happen (transmission or motor dying). For $2400 I can get a new husky with a better motor and fab deck (though only 42").

Thoughts?

JR, welcome to the forums. First of all do you need a 54" deck? If not you can buy a YTH24K48 that has a deck like this with a 10 yr warranty. Also this mower has the K57R trans from TuffTq. It's the fast tractor from Husqvarna and this thing will move for a rider. It also has the 24hp Kohler Courage Twin cylinder engine that has pleanty of tq. as well. I am very satisfied with my mower that has around 16 hours on it so far. I guess if I was going to pay $1700 on a mower I'd take a look at a local Husky dealer or a trip to your local Lowes and look at what they have to offer. Also look at the reviews online at the mowers from the lowes web site and from Mowers Direct.com
Also if you buy with the Lowes Card you get 5% off and that brings the YTH24K48 down to $1799 new.

I don't know if I need 54" but I have about 2.5-3 acres to cut and this mower sure seems to making the cutting go quick. However, since the YTH is said to have a speed of 7.75MPH and the GTH only about 5.8 they amount of work they could do would probably be similar. It looks like the YTH itself has a 3 yr parts/labor warranty.

I don't know. Anyone else: a 7 yr old GTH for $1700 (with a snow thrower) vs a new YTH?
