I have a Husqvarna Yta 22v46 Model - 960430212 Series - 030816A003570 it’s approximately a 2018 year model. It runs on idle but when you incrase increase speed It starts surging but will not increase the RPMs/power. It also seems to spit fuel out of the carb. I’ve had the mower at a repair shop for six months and he’s not been able to figure out what the problem is anybody have any suggestions?

Looks like 2016 model Lets start with the model number information from the engine so we can see what you have in front of you. My first thoughts are dropped push rods on one cylinder or a jet issue with the carb.

Would you replace the jets first? Sure doesn’t sound like a push rod when it runs, it runs smoothly.. I know it’s a Briggs and Stratton but that’s all I know about the engine it’s still at the repair shop.

If it was at my shop I would probably take a look at the carb, but no longer than it would take would also pull the valve covers just to check valve clearances and make sure all the valves were opening and closing correctly. Have seen a lobe wear down on the camshaft that would limit the distance that the intakes opened and acted just like a throttle limiter. Also a dropped exhaust valve push rod would cause spitting back into the carb.

As IL said it needs in one of our shop so we use the best diagnostic tool we have that is our experience with hands on testing. There are most pretty bad problems that simple tests can lead to the correct solution. But trying trouble these over the net can be nearly impossible.

I would pull the valve covers for sure. Those briggs twins are know for having the rods bend and sometimes they fall into the engine block. For some reason alot of them will run smooth on one cylinder until they get under a load.

Most v-twin will run good on one cylinder until loaded. I even had a few that just acted as if they were low on power which of course they were because one cylinder dead.

Just did a Briggs back in the Fall that still engage the deck. It was when actually cutting grass that if acted up. One push rod bent and the other awol down in the engine. Last Briggs cylinder head I had in stock.

My suggestion would be get a new repair shop. Why would your mower be there for six months? If they cannot diagnose and repair, then at least get it back to you.

Now I do have one JD ZTR in my shop that been here for over four months. It was very aggravating to diagnosis the problem. First I was backed logged nearly 1-1/2 months. When I did get to it. At first there was nothing that seemed to be wrong. Mowed nearly an hour without problems. It only when I went to move it 30 minutes later the starter was giving problems so a starter had to be ordered. okay that one problem was got fix. Next mowing on shut down it started backfiring out of the exhaust. What worst was the next morning when I started to moving into the shop bay it started backfiring out the air cleaner. I found a bad cylinder head and gasket problem. Head was back order for over a month. Now the weather has been terrible for the last three weeks. I mean below freezing or raining. It looks like this week is going to be the week I can finally get the engine finally repaired. On top everything now I got heart problems so I can only work about 30 minutes and have rest for at least 30 minutes on each pass at the repair job.

In this case the customer does have three other mower to used so he is working with me on this.

Those 22hp briggs do have a problem with valve seats as I have one you can pull the head if it has run to much you might get by with pinning the seat I was able to find a new head old new stock as I couldn't pinyin the seat .
