I am considering going to a Tru-cut reel mower and I am wondering how flat my yard has to be for a mower like this to be effective.

My yard is largely flat and uniform but not putting green flat. It has the odd small undulation and valley here and there. Would a reel mower make sense?

I can't think of a mower style that comes close to equaling a reel mower for what you describe. That is if you are dedicated to keeping it free of small twigs etc. that tend to not work too well lodged in the mechanism.

My only experience with reel mowers is towing a set of five behind a tractor. My only advice is keep up on your mowing and sharpening. The grass gets long and clogs up a reel and starts tearing a stripe of turf up until you notice, get out and unclog. Don't miss those sore neck days one bit.

Awesome. Thanks guys. I figure that if there is the odd spot that doesn't mow well, I can always re-contour.

reel mowers are hard to beat when it comes to mowing. most stores can order you a set of gang mowers and match them to what you want or need. keep the blades sharp and adjusted right , and you may have wished you changed to them earlier:thumbsup:

If you have a Bermuda grass like Tifway, or something like it you can't go wrong with a reel mower. Tru-Cut is defiantly one of the top brands in walk behind reel mowers (assuming you are getting a self-propel unit). The flatness question is important due to the low cutting height. They sell front roller bars that replace the caster wheels and will solve most of the issues you may experience with small dips in your yard. Or you can just start using the mower as-is and fill dips in the yard as the year continues.

Yep you will need to mow several times per week reel mowers do best on golf courses, driving ranges, ball fields, etc.
