Honda Smart Drive problem

Honda HRR216VKA with the Smart drive. Mower has not been used excessively only for edge trimming. But, 1. The drive control will not engage the drive. 2. The drive will not free-wheel when backing up? Wheels are locked up, OK moving forward. The adjustment for the cable works freely and even when I loosen the linkage all the way will not free the drive. Tightening the cable will not help either. I can see the cable is moving the lever on the gearbox. Is there a key in the gearbox broken? Help

Could be the bushings that support the drive shaft. Start with this video: Honda video

Check that the spring that returns the transmission back to a “loose” belt tension is there and working.

Make sure the belt isn’t jammed on the pulley or something like that.

After you checked the above, you’ll probably find it’s the bushings as previously mentioned. They’re a massive design flaw in these things.
