Honda EU22i Generator: Too hard to pull over.

I have a Honda EU22i (same as 2200i I'm told) Generator, which is very hard to pull over. You can not pull it over quickly enough for it to fire up.

It sat for two years. It started and ran for about an hour, then bogged down and was shut off. Ever since, it's been very hard to pull over with the pull rope.

Checked or Replaced:

- 10w-30 oil from day one, to correct limit.
- Oil was free from metal shavings and showed no sign of being silver in colour when drained.
- Pull start and cup are fine.
- Compression 60 PSI (within Honda specs).
- Decompressor works normally; reading matches decompressor behaviour.
- Valve lash and timing spot on.
- Cam belt looks new and has proper deflection.
- Top & bottom bearings appear fine.
- Stator, rotor, and Woodruff key replaced.
- No visible rubbing between stator/rotor.
- Exhaust clear.
- Tried with stator wires unplugged.
- With plug out it requires less effort (normal), but still too hard to pull over.
- Has what feels like normal cogging between stator and rotor.

Not yet checked:

- Piston & ring clearance to cylinder wall.
- Rotors fit on cranks taper.

Has anyone seen this before on an EU22i or EU2200i? What would you check next before I pull the piston and rings?

The issue may be with the generator section and not the engine.

Thanks for that.

That is precisely what this thing is doing. I thought assembling the stator and rotor without the wiring sockets attached would eliminate the inverter, but I don't think I tried to rope start the unit. I just wound it over with a socket and bar.

It is certainly worth checking.

Thanks again for your swift reply.
