Honda 2417 engine surging on reduced power

My 10 year old Honda 2417 suddenly just started 'surging' when on load. At idle it runs smoothly, with throttle up and driving, the revs come on and then fall back on a sort of 2 sec cycle. Air filter is clean,.......what could it be ?Has anyone encountered this ?

i would start by changing, or making sure your fuel filter isn't stopped up,.

Cheers for that, scrubcadet !...........I've just ordered one, ....plus an air filter and an oil filter by the by !

Surging ALWAYS indicates a lean condition.

thanks,.....I'll chaneg the filter ( easiest thing to do, I hope) If doesn't work, I'll spray carb cleaner in without disturbing jets,..................next thing would be run her on clean fuel plus Redex and hope to clean it out ............and finally, I'll dismantle , use carb cleaner, blow out and reassemble.
