Hi there, i live in upstate New York and have a JD 797 zero turn. All is good, serviced by the dealer etc, EXCEPT that recently, having put the machine up for the winter, when i start it to move it (battery was flat, jumped from a booster pack), as soon as I either engaged the control paddles, or release the hand brake, it cuts out. Immediately with the paddles, 1-2 second delay with the hand brake.
What am i doing wrong? Is it a bad battery?

thanks guys,

K9

I don't know that much about the JD but if it's like my CC ZTR and most of the other ZTR's it kinda sounds like you may have a safety switch gone bad some where.

Thanks, but I checked all three with a meter, i.e. a circuit tester, and found them to be working correctly. I did swap the battery off the Gator onto the zero turn, and it started, ran, and moved around as it should. i.e cured.
BUT, does this imply a bad battery, or a bad alternator/stator?

WELCOME to LMF...
Or most likely a bad cable/wire connection.... :smile:KennyV

Thanks Kenny. I wondered if the zero turn was simply running of the new battery, and not the alternator, or whatever the equivalent is on that machine. Should I be getting more than 12V at the battery terminals when it's running, like on a car?

Update: I tried to charge the battery but the charger won't recognise that a battery is conneceted to it. That says to me that the battery is shot....

Yes, just like an auto you should be getting 13volts+ while running and 12.6v with engine off. If you have a couple of years on the battery and the readings are low it is likely you need a new one.

Thanks gents. I happened to be passing teh JD dealer today so I picked up a battery. I'm kinda glad it wasn't more serious. The service guys there said put a deep charge on the battery before install if I'm not going to use the machine, which I will do (charge it) then it's back to storage with a battery tender on it for the winter.
