I was blowing snow the other night and suddenly the auger quit turning on the blower. No clunks or noise. The shaft behind the sprocket box turns but the auger doesn't. I'm assuming it's something in the sprocket box. My question is, do I need to replace the whole sprocket box (very expensive) or is there something common inside them that goes out?

If I understand you right, the auger fan is turning but not the auger blades. Two possible causes. First make sure that the auger blade shear bolts are not broken. If they are cheap and easy fix. If they are not broken, then I would suspect that either there auger gear in the gear box is worn or if your's has one, the shear pin in thegear box is broke. Either way you will have to open the gear box to find out. Both fixes are cheaper than replacing the entire gear box, but the auger gear is not cheap and may have taken out the drive gear also.
