do I really have to take the engine out to replace the coil????

Too many engine options to know. What engine do you have? Model number of engine and mower?

To replace the coils you need to remove the engine cowel so it all depends upon what engine you have in there and how it is mounted.
If you have a flywheel type PTO then it will require a reasonable amount of dissasembly.
