The cylinder filled with gas, it wouldn't crank, so I removed the spark plug and gas poured out.

Crank over the engine w/spark plug removed till it has no more gas is coming out. Just for safety sake, add a gas in-line shut off valve. My old mower had that happen on a 20 hp Briggs. Once was enough for me to add the gas petcock.
