No start just clicking sound, jumped the connections on Solenoid still nothing, it did hum when trouble began...dunno if it was the starter or Solenoid
best to buy starter and Solenoid?

Lets back up and start with making sure the battery is actually good. Need to have it load tested to check output. And that doesn't mean with a volt meter because you can have 12.7 volts with a meter and drop to 0 under load. A clicking sound could also be a safety switch or even the fuel solenoid on the bottom of the carb, or possibly the pto clutch if somebody forgot to disengage the deck.

Also make sure you can turn the flywheel by hand to make sure the engine isn't locked up. And I have seen more than one FX850 break the #2 rod just below the piston, wedge the piston sideways in the bore and lock up the crankshaft

check battery, clean all connections. Batteries can have fine voltage but still one or more weak cells. Also pull rope, or jump solenoid to make sure the flywheel and starter are not jammed.

First, do what sgkent and ilengine recommended. Second, when you "jump the solenoid" are you connecting a jumper between the 2 big connectors on the solenoid? That should bypass the solenoid, and crank the engine. If it does not, you aren't getting the power you need.

I took the starter off and used my jump starter to see if I could get anything from the starter, the jump starter will start a car/truck with dead battery.
The starter did not engage..so is it starter or solenoid or just buy both

Is the solenoid separate from the battery? When you used the jump starter, were you connecting direct to starter? If so, looks like starter is bad. You can check the solenoid and see if voltage is delivered to the starter terminal when key is switched to start.

If you are using a small NOCO jump pack, it may not activate a starter by itself. It has to see battery voltage and battery resistance for the internal circuits on the jump pack to activate the power out of it.

I have found in 90% of dead w/ solenoid, starter noise cranking problems, the battery or the connections were the issue.

If you jump across the 2 large terminals on the solenoid with good voltage and you get nothing, you need to pull your starter or look at your connections You didn't mention how old this machine is or it's overall condition or how it's been acting up till this point , All these factors help in trouble shooting for these guys
