Fuel Shut off solenoid smoking

Tried to start my mower the other day and it started then shut itself down. Tried to start it again and as soon as I took the mower to the on position, the fuel solenoid valve started smoking. I am going to try and take it apart and clean it today. Can I just bypass it without it having any bad effects? How much is it to replace one of these?
