Ferris 1000z blowing fuses

Hello,

My Ferris 1000Z has been blowing the 20-amp fuses(charging system and key switch). The mower has been dying lately and I thought it was a bad battery. I got a known good battery today and installed it, did the same thing. If I replace the fuses, it will start up and cut grass for a few minutes, then just die. I tried to look for obvious issues with wiring, but didn't see any. Any suggestions?

Check the PTO clutch, will it run and not blow the fuse if you run it without the clutch on..? if so replace the clutch.
 
I inspected all the visible wiring on the mower for exposed areas, didn't find any. I just took the mower out to the yard and ran it full throttle around the yard. I alternated from PTO engaged to PTO off. The mower didn't die today. I also used my volt meter to test voltage on the fully charged battery that I just installed while the mower was off, getting a little over 12volts. Then I tested the battery with the mower at full throttle, same voltage. The battery is not being charged. What is the most common part that wil prevent a charging system to quit working? Also, I noticed that the "auxilliary" fuse on the fuse block does not have any wiring connected to it even though there's a 20amp fuse installed. Is this normal? Maybe for adding on lights or something?Thanks....

One thing at a time, did it blow the fuse just running without the PTO on..?

You should have around 14.5volts at full throttle, but you may not get this if like you say the battery if fully charged.

You will need to check the AC volts from the stator, so take off the connector to the stator, the one going into the regulator-rectifier and check the volts, this should be over 28 + volts AC.

Then if volts from the stator are OK check the volts DC out of the regulator-rectifier, post up the readings. should be around 12.5v - 14.5v

The most common part that will prevent charging is the regulator-rectifier, that said it could be bad wiring, bad stator, bad connectors.

If there are no wires to the "auxiliary" fuse then leave it there, its auxiliary.
