I have a 2005 Simplicity Broadmoor with a 16 HP Kohler engine (model #1693580) that starts and runs fine, and will stop running when I turn the key to the off position...but after stopping the engine, I continue to get a loud hum from the engine. If I try to restart the engine while the motor is humming, I get nothing, doesn't even try to crank. i remove the keys entirely, still humming. I disconnect the battery, the humming stops. I reconnect the battery (still no keys), the engine cranks and tries to start?!?!?!...If I disconnect the battery again and leave it alone for minute, reconnect the battery, no humming, no cranking...insert key, on position everything seems fine, turn the key to start, engine cranks and fires up, all is well until I turn the key off and then same thing happens as above, about 25% of the time... I'm thinking ignition switch isn't fully disengaging? Does this sound right?

I sounds like a starter solenoid is sticking closed.

Like mentioned already, replace the starter solenoid; take note the position of each wire when replacing.
I would test the voltage on the small terminal of the solenoid before replacing. This was a problem listed on one of the old manufactures warranty tests. If you get a voltage reading on the small terminal, it may not be the solenoid, but a faulty key switch. Simple test and may save time and $$$$. For the record I got the question wrong, that's why I remember the question.
OK...swapped out the starter solenoid, and the engine starts and stops just fine now...I rode it into the garage to do the work, made the swap, but then tried to ride it out earlier today and now the forward and reverse pedal won't work at all?!?!? :frown: :ashamed: There is a foot switch that I think I must have some how messed up the wiring on, but after triple checking everything, I can't see where I went wrong... the only wires I really could have gotten wrong are switching the wire from the ignition switch to the solenoid and the foot pedal to the solenoid, I suppose I could have swapped them but I would imagine the engine wouldn't fire if I had done that... or I could have jostled something loose while gaining access to the starter solenoid...please help if you can...thanks.
Good thought...I pulled it on purpose actually when I was positioning in my garage, but it was the first thing I checked when I didn't go anywhere, and I had pushed it back in....Unless I some how broke it which I suppose is possible, I don't use it that often... I will double check in the AM.
