Engine size change

Does anyone know why the D140 22 hp only made the 40 Cu engine for 1 year 2011-2012 then went to a 44.2 CU from 2013-2017

Most likely is the engine manufacturer changed the specs, or discontinued that series engine. Or maybe the bigger engine was cheaper.

OR they simply found out that the mower needed a more powerful engine. Here I had a Yard Machines 42" that was a gutless wonder when it came to cutting grass with the 16.5hp engine but is now a breast with a 21hp engine. The only other change was an upgrade of the deck belt to handle the new power level.
