B&S 14.5HP model 287707 0216 01 . My neighbor gave me a Craftsman mower with the 14.5 B&S . I removed the spark plug and rotated the flywheel my hand thru several complete rotations - all seems fine - when i try to rotate the flywheel in the opposite direction it turns a little and stops like it is hitting something - Question : Should the engine be able to rotate in both directions ?

No, the backward rotation test is the test for good compression, rotating backwards bypasses the compression release in the engine, and is a good sign...

OOOOOOPs, re-read. No, if the plug is out=bad..........
Remove the valve cover and take a peek. See if you are missing a pushrod......
