Dixon Newbie needs answers

Hi
I'm a new (old) Dixon ZTR owner, and am trying to find the specifics of this beast. Judging from the serial # (DM-42-553##), I can tell it was produced in 1992, but am unsure as to whether it's a 428, 429, 503, or 542. It has a 42" White 3 blade Deck, P/N 140619. I also got the 48" snow blade (never used) P/N 851498. The Kohler Command 14 hp starts right up, and runs great, but the mower doesn't drive very well. It really only moves in reverse, but will sometimes move a few feet forward, then stop. I have removed the friction drive, and am currently accessing it. The bearings seem OK, although there is about 3/8" play up/dn on the center shaft that holds the cones. I'm thinking I should go ahead and order new cones, but would like to know how to tell if they are shot or not.
Can someone tell me the model, and how to determine cone wear?

Every shop that I ever worked at wouldn't take in those cone drive models, I was told that they were impossible to adjust/fix.

Thanks ILENGINE

There is a lot of useful info on the link you sent.
Does anyone know if there are any places in Louisville Ky. that are knowledgeable about older Dixon mowers.

After further research, I see that the serial # (DM-42-55347) says it at a 1992, and by the configuration (14hp kohler w/42" - 3 blade deck + a snow blade), the model has to be a 429, but all the 429 parts diagrams resemble a 1991 rather than a 92!
Can anyone comment on this? TIA.
