Finally bit the bullet and replaced cones, ran great for about ten seconds until a sprocket broke. I think the problem may be the way I reassembled the L-rod from the chain tensioner going to the brake (can't figure out what it's purpose is by the way). So if any owner could post a picture of how it goes together (the rod to the brake) it would be greatly appreciated. Included a picture of how I did it.
