Is there a way to reroute the air intake so that it doesn't take so much DIRT?

Maybe add a air cleaner air intake snorkel might help.

Plowpilot,

The air intake is surrounded by a huge amount flying dust, dirt and debris. JD usually has the engine air intakes placed near the "cleanest area" of the engine compartment, sometimes toward the operator and instrument panel. Depending on the model it may vary. Some models have the engine intake "prescreened" near and by external cowling, screens and grills that are easy to see and clean by the operator.

Like many of us, you cut grass only when you can and it may be very dusty and dry. Rerouting may help towards a somewhat "cleaner area" of the engine compartment. Be careful to never block it or prevent easy cleaning as it needs an open area to pull air from.
