Hello,
I would like to dig a well to use for watering the lawn. I don't know where/how to start this project. If any one has some advise it would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Seeing you live in Massachusetts it has to be a lot like NY state. First thing to do is see if there is any wells around where you live to see what kind and how deep. Just how are you going to dig this well? Seeing you are just going to water a lawn you don't have to worry about if it is good drinking water or not. One thing you will want is a good supply of water. I have had 3 wells drilled and had one dug by a back hoe on different lots and now own two lots with one drilled and one hand dug well. Also I have never did it but you can drive a point into the ground and get water.

I built one of these last year. I went about 10 ft in a few minutes. I did not have a longer piece of pipe and by the time I got one it had started raining and I never needed to water any more and still have not got a long piece of pipe to finish it. However it works fine if you are not on rock.

I have never driven one but from what I understand it is not that complicated.

Drive point is simple but requires steel threaded pipe. Short lengths are needed to add pipe as you go down so you can stand up straight and swing the hammer. Shallow wells are easy enough. Problems occur when going deep and getting out of plumb, hitting hard rock and sticking or breaking the point, sand or rock plugging the opening in the point after reaching water, not knowing how deep the water is you are trying to pump from and running out in hot weather, and running into some large company or neighbors utility line of some kind. Check your local and state laws, purchase any needed permits, have the area checked for utility lines, find out how deep your water is in the area, and get into shape if the well is fairly deep. Last one I helped drive was in the 1970s under my Grannies kitchen sink. 54 feet to water. Took about a day.

It seems to me that to water a lawn you would need a large amount of water. I don't know that much about driving a point but know of a person that did and as I recall they had a very small supply of water. But also different locations may be all together different? This is why I said see if any of your neighbors have wells and get a idea what you will need, You will be investing money into this so why not do what will work for you. Just what do you do for water now and why not use what you have?
