I just looked up your mower and tractor data showed it has the plastic general transmission rt400, which is its smallest one.

How old is mower ?
Do you have any warranty left ?

it is about 1 1/2 old. don't know about the warranty. my husband gets it to working, but it shouldn't be that hard to shift it in reverse.

I would check with John Deere dealer that is close to you and find out, the transaxle you have is fairly new and it has growing pains, it would be much better to have them repar it under warranty if you still have some.

If you are having problems now it won't get any better with time, I don't know how much they are but I'm sure you don't want to pay for a new one.

To help diagnose please answer the question in reply #3 and #6.

If you aren't replying to those because you don't understand the question I'm sure it can be explained if need be.

The John Deere D105 has what they call a CVT ( continuously Variable Transmission) So for all your forward speeds goes through a pulley system. So when CARSCW asked the question dose it shift when not running is a very important one ??? The reverse goes through a gear system and if the mower still wants to go forward with the pulleys its going to shift hard into reverse. It could be just a very simple adjustment so as Carscw asked dose it shift not running?

CVT has been around for years. The first time I come across it was in the late 60's in snowmobiles. Back then it was very troublesome but through the years it has been improved to the point that now they use it in everything, cars, motorcycles, snowmobiles and now mowers. I believe it will be the transmission of the future to come seeing it is cheap to make, very smooth, and trouble free.
