It probably is a misirouted belt but make sure to check the brake lever as it may be hanging up and not releasing the brake fully. that will burn up the hydro in no time.
it could also be that the belt is slipping in the trans or engine pulley. make sure to clean the pulleys. i recommend a little carb cleaner and some real fine steel wool. just to break the glaze from old belts.
