I have a 314 and I need a motor. I know where a 1200 hydrostatic cub is. Would the motor work in the 314?

It sounds very interesting. Check out the motor mounts, output shaft, PTO, controls, clearances, rotation, etc.
I happen to like motor swaps.

I talked to a feller at work and from what he has told me and what I've seen. It looks plausible, I'm kinda new at it though. I hate to waste the money. I would think the only difference in a 14hp kohler is whether it was for a hydrostat. Another guy told me one has a short crank and the other has a long crank.

It seems like you are on the right track. However, the length of the crankshaft would determine if you can attach the PTO or drive pulley. Check it out first.

The good thing is I found a 14hp kohler. What do I need to look for? Does a 314 take a short or long crank? I bought mine as a shell and at the moment I don't have a manual.

Search the web for technical and parts manuals for your motor and JD. They are out there.
