And while I am thinking of it don't forget to check all the bearings related to the deck. I once had a customer breaking belts that just one rough spot in an idler bearing was cause the deck to hang just long enough to snap belts at start ups. Wasn't that it had happen every time but at random times. About drove me bonkers until I found it and now know for it on deck repairs.

Don't assume the Service Manager is the best technician. That may have been true 50 years ago, but not today. Today, that would be rare.

I worked for a JD franchise in my area of South TX, and I was the only Service Manager (out of 8 locations) with and mechanical certification and background of actually working in any shop as a technician.

The Service Manager is often the person who is just a representative "whipping post" for the dealership and handles the paperwork and logistics, they are not hired because they are the best technicians.

Thanks! Im waiting to hear back from them but based on my limited knowledge, it seems that he knows his stuff and I’ve appreciated his responses when we’ve spoken. Here’s the time line of when they’ve broken:

I have the same mower and in my experience of this belt breaking, use ONLY the factory belt. I've tried the knockoffs and they won't last. Get the Cub Cadet factory belt.

I believe this is what they’re using but I’ll confirm Monday. If it is the factory belt, what else might lead to this?

I have a 17BF3AGV010 with ~350 hours and the deck belt*** keeps breaking. This will be my… 5th? 6th? In less than four year and my second repair shop. I’m not mechanically inclined but trying to figure out next steps. How would you address this with the shop? Any other insight?

Are you using Amazon belts if so problem solved, if not Houston we have a problem that will be difficult to see thru the computer.

What the shop may find helpful is letting them know which pulley the belt comes off from or when it happens. It can be hard to tell, but if you suspect it is the same spindle- that can help address the issues. Worn tension arm pivots, bearings can be an issue of course. Make sure they see the old belt. A shredded belt may have failed differently than a torque snap. What engine speed the PTO is engaged can help prolong the life of your belt as well.

But sometimes you will come across a deck that is a frequent flyer. The way of thinking about how a particular belt drive fails can can change direction by thinking about the belt being "pushed" through the drive rather than being pulled through. Because that is exactly what happens when a blade momentarily stops as when hitting the root like you did.

The nice thing about these fab decks are the housing is nice and flat. Many times it is real simple to install an extra guide bolt at the input of a spindle pulley. That way, the belt won't be pushed from the pulley. It is a useful tool when either fixing a problematic deck or problematic customer.

A weak belt tension spring may be allowing the belt to whip and bounce too much. Tension springs do get weaker with years of use. The only obvious ones are broken ones.

Weak belt tension, and missing or improperly positioned deck belt guides are two of the most common causes of deck belts coming off.
