Best way I have found is to soak it is muriatic acid. Must be done in a very well vented area (outside is best), rubber gloves, safety glasses, nose out of the way. Muriatic acid is technical hydrochloric acid, so you must be very careful when working with it. The acid will eat away the aluminum and leave the steel.
