Craftsman YS4500 Hydro-trans not engaging properly

My first post. I have a YS4500 22hp B&S riding mower about 8 or 9 years old. The hydro-stat transmission has developed a problem with engaging properly. You can move the handle slowly upward and nothing happens until, BAM, it suddenly leaps forward. My wife mowed with it last time and told me about it. It seems to have happened quickly and not over a long period of time. I have checked the fluids in the transaxle and pump and the levels are OK. The friction ring and caliper seem to be OK. Any ideas as to what it might be? Thank you for any replies.

The model number is 917.276600. I misspoke about the trans handle. When you try to engage by pushing the handle FORWARD, not up. The glazed belt is a possibility; the belt is original. I appreciate the replies. Thank you.

CRAFTSMAN Tractor Parts | Model 917276600 | SearsPartsDirect page 31 in manual, if belt is original, replace, remove deck to access belt, inspect idlers for replacement & lube all moving parts, with deck removed inspect all parts as well.

Thank you for the answers to my question. I think it is time to replace the belt, so I will put it on a hoist and get to work.
