I had my ryobi apart to lube it at its half life (5 yrs old) Seems like you need to check the drive , including the pinion gears . It is possible to pack lube or zerk lube them. I had some looseness where the drive shaft fitted into the pinion gear, did some washer shimming, but can't remember the details. Have you tried loading (holding stationary) the head while turning the engine by hand?

The same thing happened to my craftsman weed wacker. I lubed it up and now it works like new. I think I used Royal Purple but not sure.
