Craftsman rider deck height

We have a Craftsman rider Model # 917.28858. It cuts alright but the height of the deck has me baffled.
If i put the height selector on 6 the highest it is somewhat acceptable, if i lower it to #1 there is no grass left.

I have the manual, it shows adjusting the gauge wheels so they are just off the ground, when i do this the gauge wheels will leave grooves in the ground when i come to some uneven ground. It appears that the deck is fixed and the gauge wheels will control the height. What am i missing?

Any suggestions welcome

There is usually a threaded bolt to level the deck on each side...maybe they have been extended too far.

Possibly you could run then both up and get more ground clearance.

l believe your model only has one adjustable side link in rear of deck, other side is a fixed link. So you can really only level side to side. UNLESS-----

You could order another adjustable link, like the one side has, it will fit on other side. (I did it on my 917), then adjust up the rear evenly, once that is good, adjust up front to have slight slope forward, 1/16" - 5/16"..

Measuring the blades in a particular setting will be the only way to know what you are really cutting.. Setting 6 does not equate to 6" cut. Maybe 3-1/2" ..

Thank you for the input, yes you are correct in saying my rider only has one adjustment. The rider was designed for "level ground lawns" the manual says.

Brilliant, i live on a hill going towards a lake:laughing:

I will get the rider in the garage and see what mods can be made to convert it so it doesn't gouge the ground with the gauging wheels and also to make the height adjustment more user friendly.

Again thanks for the Input.

"level grounds lawns" That's a new one to me.. The higher you can get the rear of the deck, then the higher you can get the front up.. I'm telling ya, get another adjustable link (like you have) & put it on the other side.. You will be "fully adjustable" then...
