Hi,
I have had my Craftsman Self-Propelled Mower (917.377792) with the Honda 5.5 HP engine and Blade Brake Clutch (BBC) for about 9 years.
It was in storage for 7 years and when I got it out, I cleaned the air filter, gassed it up and it started on the first pull and has been running great.
Then, I decided to take it to a local mower place here in Berlin, MD to have the oil changed and the blade sharpened...big mistake.
I got it back and it was hard to start, and when it started, the blade was running,
As you may know, with this mower, when you start it, the engine starts but the blade is idle until you pull back on the red safety bar, and then push the clutch lever on the left forward to engage the blade.
Now the blade spins all the time, defeating the safety feature.
The place is telling me it needs parts that they are having a hard time getting,
I think they were not familiar with the Blade Brake Clutch and put it back together wrong.
Does anyone have any idea what they could have done that would make the blade run all the time and how to fix it?
Thanks for any help!

Most likely cause is a bearing has siezed in the BBC locking it to the crankshaft. I don't see any reason why they would have to remove the BBC to just sharpen the blade.

I have no idea, but the BBC system worked fine when I brought it in and when they returned it, the lever on the left does nothing and the blade runs all the time, even when the safety bar is released. Any idea why a bearing would seize so suddenly?
Also, what would be involved in fixing it if it is a BBC bearing?
Thanks for your help!
