As kids we didn't have purchased sleds but we knew how to shave the bark from a couple of small oak limbs with the axe for sled runners and build our own low boy sleds . More often than not it was pulled with a running horse with snow flipping from the feet directly in our face. But that was just life on the farm .
On other occasions we just used the steel scoop shovel to go sliding down a steep hill ( aluminum hadn't been discovered for shovels in those days ) . Now my son shows my grand daughter how he did it and how his dad did it . She may never get to experience going in a circle on a 75 ft. home made rope at about 40 miles / hour behind a running horse but at least she has experienced the scoop shovel ride .

She looks like she's having the time of her life. Her smile made me smile. Thanks for sharing that, and we should all make sure that traditions like that never get forgotten.
